Burnt Crust Pottery
Working from her studio in Persistence Works, Sheffield, Nichola makes functional wheel-thrown ceramics. Drawing on 20 years of experience in the food industry, her work places a strong emphasis on tactility and the interaction of hands with clay. She incorporates locally dug clay from nearby rivers into both the body and glazes of her pieces, aiming to create a tangible connection between the pots and the surrounding landscape. Nichola fires her work in gas or wood-fuelled kilns using a reduction atmosphere, which enhances the natural iron content of the wild clay.
